ECWSA NEWS SPRING 2015 - What is an EDU?

By Cheri Deener

An EDU or “Equivalent Dwelling Unit” is a unit of measure of the volume of expected wastewater flow generated by the average single family residence.  The EDU is determined by the Authority’s engineer using the factors authorized by the Municipality Authorities Act to calculate the annual flows treated at the sewer plant.  Use of EDU’s enables the Authority to charge uniform rates to its customers.

Residential:  In Evans City 1 EDU is equal to 5400 gallons.  This means that the average single family residence in Evans City generates approximately 5400 gallons of wastewater monthly.  The cost of treating this monthly wastewater flow is one of the components that comprises the monthly sewage bill for each customer.

Industrial and Commercial:  Industrial and commercial customers are also charged by EDU’s.  However, the number of EDU’s they are charged varies based on the previous year’s wastewater flows generated by each industrial and commercial customer.

We hope this helps you understand your monthly bill.
